Star Trek™ Fleet Command

A Deep Dive into the Star Trek Universe: A Review of Star Trek™ Fleet Command

I've always been a fan of Star Trek, especially The Next Generation, where there's a powerful message that conflict should always be the last resort. This is why Star Trek™ Fleet Command intrigued me - it promised to bring me to the familiar corners of the Star Trek universe with a fresh perspective.

Commanding a starship as the Captain is both exciting and terrifying, and Star Trek Fleet Command perfectly captures that balance. The gameplay begins with the player as a first officer, thrown into the Captain's seat after a mysterious calamity. The shift in responsibility is immediately felt, with your character speaking to the crew for strategic orders: weapons control, shield management, and navigation, amongst other options. As a captain, you have a hands-on approach to commanding your crew during treacherous battles. This system emulates what happens in Star Trek brilliantly, adding another layer of authenticity.

The first-person perspective of Fleet Command immerses you even more into the game. From your captain's chair, you issue commands by facing different members of the crew; turn to your right and put the ship on red alert should an enemy suddenly appear, or boost your shields by going to yellow alert. The intensity of a Star Trek space battle is effectively captured in this game - the red-alert alarm deafening the area, the screen shaking as the ship takes damage. The first-person perspective makes the experience intense and exciting.

In a very Trek-like fashion, you constantly have to balance the ship’s power output between different systems during your many space battles. You can boost power to your sensor array for a wider scan, increase your weapons' power if they're struggling to get through an enemy's shields, or reinforce your own shields if you're under heavy fire. Simultaneously, overdoing the balancing act could cause the ship's power transmission grid to falter. This system beautifully captures the essence of Star Trek’s combat scenarios.

Switching to a third-person view allows you an unobstructed view of your surroundings, beautifully designed with alien suns and asteroid fields. Despite the low-resolution textures, the familiar sight of planets, Starfleet ships, and the bridge of a Starfleet vessel felt like a direct connection to the series.

The presence of Jean-Luc Picard and Data, with their original voice actors reprising their roles, adds a touch of authenticity to the experience. The sudden twists in the plot, like the revelation of the star explosion not being a natural event, keep you on your toes, reinforcing the vibe of the Star Trek series.

Conclusion

Overall, Star Trek™ Fleet Command does have room for improvement, particularly in its sound design and by adding elements of diplomacy to resolve conflicts. However, it does a commendable job in capturing the essence of being a captain in the Star Trek universe. The gameplay is authentic, the visuals are connected to the series, and the unique power system offers a genuine Star Trek feel. I hope to see more from this franchise soon. As a long-time Star Trek fan, it's my belief that Fleet Command has revolutionized how we experience this beloved universe.

Pros:

  • Immersive first-person perspective;
  • Balanced gameplay mechanics;
  • Sense of authenticity with guest appearances

Cons:

  • Limited non-combat variety;
  • Low-resolution textures.
